Three BIG Reasons to Invest in a Professionally Written Resume

So you’ve just gotten the dreaded e-mail, pink slip, or endured that last painful closed-door meeting and now ... you’re LAID OFF. After the initial panic has passed, you very wisely make a list of what you need to do to high gear your job search. If the first item isn’t hiring a professional résumé writer, you’re in for a very long campaign, not just a search.

1. You’re a Manager or a Director, not a writer. Chances are conveying who you are or what you’ve done over the last ten years on a piece of paper is going to give you a whopping headache. It’s hard to write about yourself, your accomplishments, and your skills in a way that makes someone want to pick up the phone. You don’t want to be perceived as “bragging” or “boasting” when really, that’s the whole point of a résumé – it’s a marketing document that brands YOU! Which brings me to my second point…

2. Things have changed considerably since you last looked for a job. If you’ve been with the same company for the last ten years, or haven’t had to “look” for a job because you’re so awesome that you’ve always been recruited, you’re in for a real surprise. Thanks to the Internet, the way we convey information has changed — from how it looks and how it reads, to rewritten rules of grammar and language. The “objective / responsibility/ list-every-detail three-page novel screams “old school.” And it will not cut it in today’s 17-seconds-to-make-an-impression virtual world … that’s if human eyes actually read the document first. Did I mention it has to be full of keywords so an SEO will at least send it to Tiffany in HR? If you don’t know what that last sentence means, you should consider hiring a professional résumé writer.

3. How much is your career worth to you? A LOT is probably your first answer. You’ve worked hard. You’ve attended professional development seminars. You’ve read books on how to be better at what you do. Your cell phone has all the bells and whistles for instant communication.

Think of a professionally-written résumé as an essential business tool used to accomplish a specific task — getting the reader to call you for an interview. It is interesting how we are hearing comments from current clients like this: “In this competitive job market, I understand the importance of quality documentation, and I know if I want to reach my goals, it is going to to take a powerful résumé.”

It is amazing how it took an economic crisis for people to understand the true value of what we do as certified professionals. Being unemployed can be daunting — working with a professional résumé writer and career coach can focus your efforts by building a strategy for conducting a successful career search. When you partner with someone who has a vested interest in getting you to the next level of your career, you’re investing in your own success.
